LETS BEGIN SHALL WE
Homo Hero's Award
The following pages will help you to understand the LGBT history of persecution that is long forgotten, I have focused on Germany and the Second World War because the Homosexuals were one of the first victims of the Nazis. Their persecution began in 1934 one year after Hitler had come to power and how laws were passed against homosexuals that would lead to arrest by the Gestapo, where they could either be sent to a prison or worse to a concentration camp. In the camps we were forced to wear a pink triangle on our camp uniforms and could be used for medical experiments, forced labour and treated far worse than the other prisoners, after the liberation of the camps in 1945 homosexuals were not recognized as victims of the holocaust and were re-imprisoned under the Paragraph 175 amended version of 1935 that remained in place in Germany until 1969. In Britain homosexuals were arrested and thrown into prisons, the British gay society was very underground due to arrest; those in the military would be thrown out of the services with a dishonourable discharge and imprisoned if caught. Life was very tough in those days if you were homosexual you could be arrested by the police and life in prison could be really hard for you, and after your release people would know just why you were arrested and you could be shamed. In Britain in 1967 homosexuality was decriminalized between consenting adults who were 21 and over and in the many years that would follow a campaign would lower that age to 18 and now 16 years of age, we also have equality in the work place, we can legally adopt and also we can now marry as civil partnerships were made legal in 2005 in Britain. All this would not be possible without the generations before us who campaigned and fought to get our equal place in society and thanks to them we have that freedom in society to be Lesbian, Gay, and Bi & Transgender.
